Media Cinematic Review - YCI

The only recently released movie I have seen so far into the new year is called You’re Cordially Invited starring Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell. I chose this movie because there haven’t been many good releases I have been able to watch considering it is still February. I didn’t see this movie in theatres, instead, I watched it on Prime Video. I didn’t see it on the news or in any ads so it came as a surprise to me, but the movies that come as surprises and end up being really good watches I hold in an important place.

The new release sees Will Ferrell who plays Jim and Reese Witherspoon who plays Margot double-booking a wedding at their Bridal Suite which causes absolute chaos between the families, not knowing how to share the eventful moment. The movie is written and directed by Nicholas Stoller who is best known for comedic movies. He has been best known for movie/ TV Show production in the last decade, directing movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Neighbors. Will Ferrell is best known for his set of top-tier movies like Elf, Step Brothers, Megamind, and The Lego Movie. Reese Witherspoon has her share of best hits as well, starring in movies like Legally Blonde, Monster’s Vs. Aliens, and Sing. Both have combined forces to create an amazing comedy. The movie was released to streaming services instead of theatres so there were no box office sales. The best streaming service to watch the movie is currently Prime Video.

Interview: ‘You’re Cordially Invited’ Director Nicholas Stoller

You're Cordially Invited (2025) Summary, Latest News, Trailer, Cast, Where to Watch and More

Nicholas Scoller has been known for his contributions to comedies like Captain Underpants, Sex Tape, and The Muppets but he has also switched up his preferences by working on movies and shows like the thriller Goosebumps and comedy with romance in the mix, Bros

You’re Cordially Invited is the first major movie for Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon to work together, two famous stars who demonstrate the uniqueness of this movie. They are both known for comedic cinema, making their combined performance a brilliant move for viewers. The movie plays off the hilariousness of common disagreements, fights, hostility, and passive aggressiveness between members of society. They display their aggression through their attempts at getting back at each other as the movie builds up comedic intensity. The movie was created for anyone seeking a laugh, with no target audience in mind. Anyone who wants a laugh should understand the worth of watching. It avoids stereotypes and offensive material through diversity and inclusion displayed throughout the plot of the movie. Sexuality, gender, and race are all examples shown in the movie with no negative light shed in any areas.

One of the best strengths of the movie is its ability to make people laugh, from the events to the familiar faces of comedic stars to the constant chaos created by the unfolding plot. It meets its goal of making the audience enjoy what they view. An obvious weakness of the show is its viral abilities. Though the movie has two very well-known stars, the movie itself did not show strength in its advertising, skipping theatres and going straight to the shelves of streaming. Despite its newness, not many people have gotten the chance to know of its existence and watch. No box office sales also means the movie isn't making enough money to further spike popularity. Since it is not well known enough to be discussed on a large scale, it may be forgotten about as time progresses, despite being a well-liked movie. Nicholas Stoller is not well known either making it more difficult to spread the word of his usual productions, though that could change if he continues to make great cinema. Despite my opinion, many viewers had mixed feelings about the movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, the mixture of good and bad reviews level about half and half. Many liked it, others not so much. For example, one review by Randy Myers read “Trouble is, “Invited” lacks chemistry between its leads and wastes a weird cameo with Nick Jonas (it falls flat) and the comedic talents of Fortune Feimster, who deserves more screen time”. Other top critics mentioned certain unnecessary scenes like the alligator wrestling, the Nick Jonas cameo, and overall Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon were cut out for bigger roles. Other critic reviews and comments can be found on the Rotten Tomatoes website below.

I was able to get my family to watch the movie which meant I watched it a second time but it was just as funny the next time around. I’ve gotten to learn more about the director behind the movie and other movies he has gotten to be a part of. Content for Stoller can be found on Instagram, YT, TikTok, and Facebook. His latest posts have been on the new release with over 300 likes and many comments praising the movie. I personally only use Instagram so I found he has about 7.2k followers and 752 posts.

From my review I was able to learn a lot more about the legend behind this masterpiece of a movie, Nicholas Stoller who while is pretty low profile in terms of popularity, is an amazing director and creator. I also learned of the much bigger amount of potential this movie has if it reaches a larger audience. Right now it hasn't taken off but with heavier advertising, it can be a worldwide hit. I am thankful for being able to watch and write about two amazing stars, Ferrell,= and Witherspoon, they have once again given an amazing performance in my favorite genre of cinema, comedy. If the movie had started in theatres I wouldn't have hesitated to pay money to watch it. I hope Stoller can grow on social media after this movie and can continue making great movies. I see hope for bigger cinematic masterpieces. This is only the beginning for Stoller.
