Hunter Eilers

Hello there. My name is Hunter Eilers and this is currently my second year at LBCC. I am pursuing a major in Cybersecurity in hopes of working with computers in some kind of three-letter agency such as the FBI. I'm currently serving in the military, the Army to be specific, and plan to retire from it. I am currently attending LBCC because it will allow me to complete any prerequisite courses and meet the required credit amount so I can move to a university and begin my major there. I look forward to learning about societal issues in this class in a deeper depth than my current understanding.

I am most interested in learning about anything to do with technology since it will be a big contributing factor to my major so anything related to social media like Facebook or Instagram and what kind of influences they have on the world, both positive and negative. The pros and cons of moving from an industrialized society where technology was unknown to where we are now. The good things and bad things have come out of it. I am passionate about working out outside of school. When I am not working at my job, I like lifting weights to keep myself looking fit and healthy. I would say that is my favorite hobby outside of school and work.

I consider my 3 main sources to be scholarly articles since I learned from college that those are go-to sources to use when backing up claims, my phone which includes google, social media, and YouTube which provide most of my information and answers, and my friends because personal experience is important when considering certain topics. I would say scholarly articles are pretty reliable since they are reviewed and known for being as such. I would say the sources I use on my phone are somewhat reliable but are prone to having misinformation, disinformation, and plenty of bias. And often it is hard to tell what is biased and what isn’t. My friends can be reliable when providing their personal opinions but they too can be just as biased as the sources I get on my phone and can easily provide exaggerated or false information. I am very concerned for the future of online information, especially with the rate AI is evolving. Pretty soon we will not be able to tell what is real and what isn't anymore. I check my information with those around me who I can confirm are familiar with the source and its credibility. I’ll check for sites and sources that are known to be biased and misleading. I’ll also look for similar articles related to what I am looking at and see if they match up.
